BMW has whisked the sheets off its 2011 X3, and the second-generation crossover looks suspiciously like its predecessor. Beyond a seemingly endless parade of spy shots over the last couple of years, that’s predictable, as the Spartanburg-built X3 has been a considerable sales success for the German automaker.
While the sheetmetal stays largely the same, the lineup receives new engines and an eight-speed automatic gearbox that’s set to spread like kudzu throughout the automaker’s offerings. The X3 also becomes the first model in BMW’s growing X franchise to adopt electric power steering (the automaker’s controversial variable sports steering rack is optional), as well as optional Damper Control and Dynamic Drive Control (as seen on its range of sedans and sports cars).
In addition to the new sheetmetal, BMW promises added rear seat room, addressing one of the vehicle’s key shortcomings for the North American market.
Power will come from BMW’s Twinpower Turbo (Bimmerese for twin-scroll turbo) inline six-cylinder engine that gives the XDrive35i model 306 brake horsepower at 5,800 rpm with max torque of 295 pound-feet of torque at just 1,300 rpm. That’s good enough for a 0-62 mph time of just 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 152 mph, though it’s not clear if that figure will be governed when it reaches us Yanks. An entry-level xDrive28i model will also receive I-6 power, with 240 hp and 230 pound-feet of torque. Naturally, diesel mills will also be available in other areas of the globe, but as of yet, BMW officials haven’t committed to bringing an oil burner to the States. The gas model, however, should be in showrooms before year’s end.

Nowack Motors have released an upgrade package for the BMW M5 which was dubbed as the Hans Nowack Edition to honor the retirement of the M V10 engine. The cars upgrades are mainly in the engine compartment but this modified M5 also received a couple of styling changes such as two bespoke air collectors painted to match the exterior color.
Named the N635S 5.8 Hans Nowack Edition, the 5.0L V10 pushes out 718-hp over the factory 507-hp and revs up to 9000 rpm. Press Release
A farewell celebration for the naturally aspirated V10 masterpieces of the BMW M GmbH: NOWACK MOTORS created a world unique state-of-the-art masterpiece to celebrate the end of the era of high revving naturally aspirated BMW M engines, the N635S 5.8 "Hans Nowack Edition", offering an unmatchable maximum power output of 718hp at 9.000rpm.
NOWACK MOTORS, the world's no. 1 specialist company for engineering and manufacturing unique high performance engines on basis of all BMW M engines (4-, 6-, 8- and 10-cylinder) unveils a world unique naturally aspirated masterpiece, the N635S 5.8 "Hans Nowack Edition".
The N635S 5.8 is a tribute from Oliver Nowack to his father Hans, creator of world famed race and road engines and one of the inventors of what is nowadays called ECU-Tuning. Hans Nowack was an overall technical genius who always had his own approach when engineering and building high performance engines, resulting in numerous glorious victories of his cars in international motorsports, like e.g. the victory of the European Touring Car championship with a BMW 635CSi with driver Helmut Kelleners. He never stopped to invent world-class high performance engines, and after his active career, he continued to be a mentor for his son Oliver, who followed him in his footsteps most successfully. Hans Nowack died in 2005, and Oliver created this engine to pay tribute to the lifework of his father.
It definitely is the pinnacle of all high performance engines ever built on basis of the M GmbH's 5.0ltrs. V10 offering a standard maximum power output of 507hp.
Classic mechanical tuning techniques, the usage of the latest, most advanced coating materials and techniques combined with a most sophisticated, individual remap of the ECU were always NOWACK MOTORS' no. 1 choice when increasing power and torque of naturally aspirated engines, further enhancing the thrill that only a naturally aspirated high performance engine provides. Forced induction, neither by supercharging nor turbo charging, never was an option to increase the performance of the 5.0ltrs. V10 engine as it does not suit the engine's overall technical layout and characteristics. Furthermore, a forced induction engine based on a NA engine never offers the refinement and reliability of a perfectly engineered and manufactured naturally aspirated high performance engine. Thus, it is the ultimate challenge for every high performance engine manufacturer.
Each NOWACK MOTORS N635S 5.8 ?Hans Nowack Edition" is equipped with two NOWACK MOTORS bespoke intake air collectors with a higher air volume in order to provide the engine with sufficient intake air quantity.
The colour of the paintwork for the air collectors is being determined by the exterior colour of the car.
Only this time, the name differs from all other NOWACK MOTORS creations. The name does not reveal the actual maximum power output of the engine, clearly separating this unique showcase of highly sophisticated manufacture of internal combustion engines from the N700 4.8 with 715hp, the latest high performance engine creation based on the new 4.4ltrs. BMW M Biturbo V8 engine of the new era being used in the X5M and X6M. As we all know, this engine will be used to propel the upcoming new M5 of the F10 series by next year.
All internal parts of the engine are being replaced by NOWACK MOTORS' high performance parts, thus every M5/M6 (also cars with a higher mileage), can be converted to a NOWACK MOTORS N635S 5.8 "Hans Nowack Edition".
As every engine is brand new after the conversion, NOWACK MOTORS provides an engine warranty of 12 months without kilometer limitation.

Press Release
The BMW X5: A special kind of driving pleasure a million times over.
Munich. From trendsetter to bestseller. Within just eleven years, one million BMW X5 models have been sold. The anniversary edition, a sapphire black metallic BMW X5 xDrive35i featuring cinnamon brown Nevada leather trim, came off the assembly line at the American BMW plant in Spartanburg/South Carolina and is currently on its way to a customer in China. Achieving the seven-digit production figure is a further milestone in the success story of the first Sports Activity Vehicle. When it premiered in 1999, the four-wheel driven BMW X5 was the first vehicle of its kind. Since then, the concept of combining superior dynamics on tarmac with outstanding traction on off-road terrain, has been a show-stopper worldwide, whilst also generating crucial impulses for the BMW model portfolio. With the family of BMW X models, which has meanwhile grown to comprise a total of four members, the company has recorded steadily increasing sales figures unmatched by any other manufacturer with comparable vehicles.
The BMW X5 remains the symbol and most crucial innovator for the continuing success of the Sports Activity Vehicle concept. The spacious five-door car offers up to seven seats, its intelligent four-wheel drive system BMW xDrive guarantees awesome acceleration, both on and off road. Permanent, electronically controlled four-wheel drive technology distributes motive force to the front and rear wheels variably and according to each specific situation. Furthermore, a luxurious interior ambience and a wide choice of innovative driver assistance systems contribute towards the characteristic manifestation of driving pleasure so typical of a BMW.
Moreover, numerous awards document the outstanding product quality with regard to design, driving pleasure, safety and reliability. In 2007, the BMW X5 received, inter alia, the design prize “autonis” awarded by the trade journal “auto motor und sport” for the most attractive design, as well as a Gold Award in the J.D. Power Study on customer satisfaction in North America. The American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) voted this Sports Activity Vehicle as the “Top Safety Pick” for outstanding crash test behaviour both in 2007 and 2008. Current proof of the vehicle’s exceptional reliability is given by the latest breakdown statistics issued by Europe’s largest automobile club ADAC, in which the BMW X5 ranks second place behind the BMW X3 in the all-terrain vehicle category.
Again in 2010, the BMW X5 is more than ever a role model and benchmark in its class in terms of driving dynamics, efficiency, variability, premium quality and safety. With a concisely modified design, a thoroughly revised engine range and additional innovative equipment features, it continues to extend its lead within the competitive environment. Its trendsetting qualities include outstanding efficiency unparalleled in this particular segment. A prime example of this is the BMW X5 xDrive30d, which is powered by a 180 kW/245 bhp straight six-cylinder diesel engine and achieves an average fuel consumption of 7.4 litres/100 km in the EU test cycle.
With its multitude of qualities the BMW X5 has become the most significant innovator within the entire competitive environment of four-wheel driven vehicles. At the same time, the premium car builder has also repeatedly assumed the cutting edge in each respective segment with the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe, the BMW X6, and with the compact BMW X1.
The development of the BMW Spartanburg plant is also closely linked with the success story of the BMW X5. The location, which has existed for 15 years now, has become the most crucial centre of expertise for BMW X models within the BMW Group’s global production network. Built in Spartanburg, the BMW X5 is now exported to more than 120 countries, with the BMW X6 also being produced there for export to the entire global market. Before the end of this year, production of the latest BMW X3 generation will commence at this location.
BMW 3 Series Travels 1,013 Miles on One Tank of Fuel

BMW has just unveiled a new iteration of the 3-Series, and it is making quite a splash in Europe. It won’t be coming across the pond, but we sure wish that it were.
The BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Saloon develops 163 hp between 3,500 rpm to 4,200 rpm and 360 Nm of torque from 1,750 rpm to 3,000rpm. This enables the car to sprint from naught to 62mph in 8.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 137 mph (220 km/h).
UK motoring journalist Tom Ford drove a new BMW 320d EfficientDynamics sedan from the UK to Munich and back, on one tank of diesel fuel. The total distance travelled was 1,630 kilometres (1,013 miles), which means the car delivered 68.9mpg overall and CO2 emissions of only 109g/km. These are the same figures claimed by BMW.
BMW can be proud and owners of the E90 320d who must have known the car was capable of such range. Biggest reason for the good news is that the car achieved figures of 75.9 mpg UK (63.2 mpg US or 3.7lt/100km), and never went below 65 mpg UK (54.1 mpg US or 4.4 lt/100km) for the entire trip. The overall figures for Tom Ford and the BMW 320d come in at an average speed of 59.3mph (95.4km/h) and 68.9mpg UK (57.4 mpg US or 4.1 lt/100km).
It propels the BMW from zero to 62mph (100km/h) in 8.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 137mph or 220km/h while returning a combined fuel consumption of 4.1 lt/100km, equal to 57.4mpg US or 68.9 mpg UK, and a CO2 rating of 109g/km in the EU test cycle.

Press Release
BMW's most fuel-efficient and greenest-ever 3 Series completes record-breaking journey on one tank of fuel
BMW's cleanest and greenest 3 Series ever has just completed a record-breaking journey from the UK to Munich and back - on one tank of fuel.
Filled up at the Channel Tunnel, the new BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Saloon made it to Munich, then as far as Lille on the return leg - a staggering total of 1,013 miles on a single tank of fuel - before needing to be refuelled.
To put it in a UK geographic context, the distance achieved would have meant being able to drive from Land's End to John O'Groats, and still having 200 miles range left in the tank.
Just as impressive was that the intrepid driver - motoring journalist and TV presenter Tom Ford - didn't use efficient driving techniques such as coasting, or drive deliberately slowly for the trip, coverage of which appeared in yesterday's Sunday Times newspaper.
Although switching the air con and radio off as a concession to fuel saving, Tom managed a reasonable motorway pace all the way there and back, proving that in the real world, the new BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Saloon delivers what it promises on paper - an official combined figure of 68.9mpg and CO2 emissions of only 109g/km.
On the way to Munich, Tom achieved highs of 75.9mpg, and didn't dip below 65mpg for the entire trip. With an average speed of 59.3mph, the car achieved 68.9mpg overall.
He said: "I was prepared for this car to fail in the real world. I was wrong. Although I did try and be careful and drive in a feather-footed manner, I did cruise at a reasonable 65ish mph on the autoroutes and autobahns, so faster than the usual economy run pace.
"Think about it in the context of everyday motoring: comfortably more than 1,000 miles on one tank of diesel means just 12 fills a year for the average motorist - and even driven normally I still think you're looking at 750-800 miles per fill. BMW's EfficientDynamics: it does what it says on the tin."
The BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Saloon develops 163hp between 3,500rpm to 4,200rpm and 360Nm of torque from 1,750rpm to 3,000rpm. This equates to a zero to 62mph time of 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 137mph ensuring that while it might be extremely efficient, it still offers sporting performance - a fact not lost on Tom.
He said: "It's difficult to tell the difference between this model and a standard 320d in terms of driving performance which is brilliant. It means that as well as the obvious financial advantages, this special 320d is a car for the environmentally conscious who still want a car that drives superbly."
For drivers choosing the BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Saloon, there is no VED to pay for the first year of purchase due to its low CO2 figure and a 13 per cent benefit-in-kind company car tax rating and sporting ability thanks to its 163bhp. For a business buying one, the sub 110g/km emissions mean 100 per cent first year writing down allowances, allowing the model's full first year depreciation against to be offset against Corporation Tax.
The BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Saloon comes with the existing suite of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies, including Auto Start-Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration and Electric Power Steering for optimum performance. However it also achieves its class-leading emissions with the addition of innovative engine construction, a longer transmission ratio, lowered suspension and the use of specially designed aerodynamic alloy wheels with Michelin EnergySaver tyres.
